Home, Sweet Home

14 Thursday Jul 2016

It’s always bittersweet to come home after a wonderful trip, but I must say sleeping in our bed last night felt so good! We forced ourselves to go to bed at a relatively normal hour, and to sleep in until a normal hour.  (I was ready to prowl the house at about 3:30AM, but I knew that would lead to a longer jetlag recovery.) Our purring fur-baby was very happy to see us, so much so that she sat outside our bedroom door and meowed until I finally let her in with us. (We don’t generally let the fur-babies in our bedroom, so this was a special treat for her!) We unpacked essentials last night, and my other half will attack the laundry over the next few days.

Some of the smaller details of our trip for those who may be looking to travel to Norway or Italy, or those who are just curious-minded like me.

We flew British Airways between the US and Oslo with a layover/transit in London’s Heathrow. Not the worst flights, but certainly not the best we’ve had either.  (The best is still held by Singapore Airlines in my opinion.) BA has a new computer system that crashed multiple times on both of our main travel days. Customs & Immigration was a breeze in each country, and the airports were easy to navigate. Oslo and Heathrow both had plenty of assistants available to answer questions and point you in the right direction.

From Rome to Oslo we flew Norwegian Airlines. For the price ($327 total for two of us, including travel insurance), we got a brand new airplane (although the WiFi had not been hooked up yet). Flight crew was very friendly, but they charge for all beverages (250 NOK for a water) and you can only eat food purchased onboard. If it’s a short flight, I would definitely fly them again.

The first night in Oslo we stayed at CityBox Hotel. Reception and concierge were Ipads. Very hip and modern, and we didn’t have to worry about a late check-in! Room was clean and comfortable.  There was a wonderful French cafe just off the lobby for breakfast. If you are traveling from the US to Europe, you need to quickly adjust to the size and room amenity differences.  Closet space is small or non-existent throughout Europe, and only the hotels in Italy had a mini fridge.  Granted, we stayed in moderately priced rooms at 3+ star hotels. 4-5 star hotels might be somewhat different – I prefer to spend my money on the daytime experiences, food and shopping. A hotel room to me is where I get my rest and freshen up each day, so I don’t require much in the way of amenities.

The hotel in Verona, Hotel Gardenia, was probably the worst experience of the trip. Fortunately it was only one night (technically about 5 hours)…the front desk clerk was essentially incompetent, and wanted to keep our documents (passports, etc) until morning. No, thank you!  The ladies took the room keys and our luggage and set off to find our rooms and left the guys to wait for the documents.  The clerk did not tell us which way to go to get to our room until we showed up again in the lobby to ask for directions.  I did not go into the lobby in the morning, but I was told the desk clerk then was as rude as the evening one. A review was left on TripAdvisor, so at least others can be informed as well.

Our flat in Trequanda is available on VRBO (https://www.vrbo.com/440247). I cannot express in words how wonderful this little town is. The flat is situated conveniently to the square and parking area. (On street parking is very limited due to the narrow streets.)  An early morning stroll for a cappucino and pastry in town, then off to explore the surrounding areas, of which there are many.

Tuscan towns are built on top of hills.  We walked an average of 3 – 6 miles per day (at least according to my Samsung Gear Fit2). Comfortable, supportive walking shoes are a must, especially as most of the roads in town are all cobblestone. There are plenty of benches and places to sit throughout the towns if you need a rest. The shopping was wonderful, and a great selection of items.  We generally browsed at the bottom of the hill and checked prices for items, then compared as we went up.  If the shop at the bottom was still the best price, we made our purchases on our way back to the car rather than carrying bags with us the entire day. If you travel to Italy in the summer, bring a fan – it is hot and humid, and very few places are air conditioned. There was a wonderful breeze most days, but that alone will not keep you cool. I finally purchased a fan in Montepulciano, and was using it daily through the flight home yesterday.

Always throw a bathing suit in your luggage, even if you are positive you won’t need it. (That’s a reminder for me, mostly.)  The Mediterranean coast of Italy is rocky and slippery, so beach/water shoes are recommended.

Rome really needs more than 2 days to see it properly.  We did the quick tour because of time, but next trip will be a longer stay. Taxis are easily found and relatively inexpensive. (A 15 – 20 minute ride for 4-5 of us averaged €9 – €10.) Grab a street map from your hotel as Rome is not easy to navigate without one. We stayed at Grand Hotel Olympic near Vatican City. Donatella, the hotel manager, was wonderful. My other half taught her how to reset the WiFi when it became overloaded. It is an older hotel and showed signs of wear and tear. The shower was very small, as is the case with most European hotels, but this one seemed extra small. Breakfast was included, but the food was fair.  One morning the cappucino machine was broken, the pastries did not seem particularly fresh, but there was a large selection of meat and cheese. I would have liked some fresh fruit as a option.

Our final nights in Oslo were at the Comfort Hotel Børsparken. A huge lobby area with tables and chairs, free coffee 24 hours/day, and a small selection of snacks and beverages for purchase by the front desk. There is apparently one of the largest and best gyms in the area on their lower level, but we didn’t check it out. Very conveniently located to the train station and a slightly longer walk to the waterfront and ferries. Ask ahead of checkout if there are tour groups staying at the hotel…we had to take the service elevator to get down to check out on our last day as the main elevator was consistently full. Turned out there were two tour buses checking out the same time we were.

Not sure when or where our next Big Adventure will be, but we will be checking out areas closer to home in the coming months.  I do get a daytrip to Chicago with my mom in 10 days, so there may be a quick post then.  Not sure what she has planned, other than a train ride up and back!

Until the next time…thanks for traveling with us! We hope you enjoyed our trip virtually as much as we did in reality.

Last day of Big Adventure 2016

12 Tuesday Jul 2016

We arrived in Oslo last evening, successfully left 2 bags checked at the airport, and took the train into town. A quick walk from the Sentralstasjon to our hotel…maybe not as quick as it would have been under normal circumstances as my legs were still sore from the cupola climb and Roma expedition, but we made it!  A very hip little place an easy walk to transportation and things we wanted to see.

Last night’s dinner was at Nilsen Spiseri, a small restaurant a block away from the hotel.  It is right next door to a hostel, and our waiter has been working there for 6 months after a stay in the hostel. My other half opted for poached salmon, and I decided to go outside the comfort zone with reindeer stew. I must say I was a little nervous, but it was absolutely delicious!

We slept in a bit this morning (exhaustion had begun to hit us both), then ventured out about 11AM. My other half went to the tourist information center a block away and bought two Oslo Passes for us. Best purchase of the day as they allowed free admission to every place we visited and free rides on transportation (ferries and light rail).  A quick walk to the waterfront, and we boarded a ferry to the Norsk Folkemuseum and Viking Ship Museum.

The Folkemuseum did not have a lot going on, but was still an interesting walk about.  The Viking Ship Museum was great fun.  Amazing that these actual vessels were found buried and intact. They’d actually been used as burial ships, a coffin of sorts. They’d been looted, so there was no jewelry or articles of value, but the items that did survive have some significant historical value!

From there it was a leisurely walk to the Fram Museum. The Fram was the first wooden sailing vessel to explore both the North and South Poles. It is fully preserved, and you can go aboard. Very interesting to read about the expeditions and science experiments carried out on each voyage.

A ferry ride across the fjord back to Oslo, and we decided it was lunchtime.  A stroll down the pier reading every menu, and we opted for Louise’s. Tasty mussels steamed in white wine with lemon and seasoning for me, and fish and chips for the Mister. His fish was more along the lines of Sri Lankan fish cutlets and not the British fish and chips he expected.  But we will have a layover in London tomorrow, so we can make up for it there.  Not that he minded fish cutlets at all – they are one of his favorite foods!  A small rain shower as we finished lunch, and a light drizzle while we ate our Swiss ice cream cones on our way to the Nobel Peace Center.

Nobel Peace Center had wonderful exhibits. It was very moving, and photos were an afterthought.  The current exhibit was about the 1936 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Carl Von Ossietzky. Upstairs were more exhibits, and a large section on the Syrian refugee crisis from the perspective of Syrian children.  Hard to read their words without getting a lump in the throat. As you go back down to the main level, children (and adults, too, I suppose) are encouraged to post a “thought bubble” about peace.

Next stop, Vigeland Park. Too far away to walk, especially with dark clouds gathering on the horizon.  We pulled up Google maps, figured out where to catch the light rail, and off we went.  My father was in Oslo in 1956 or 1957, and I was in search of the fountain from one of his photos.  We thought this might be the one.  I’m not quite sure and will need to look at his photo when I get home.  Either way, it was an easy trip, and worth the train ride.  The park has over 200 bronze and granite scuptures by Gustav Vigeland.  A tremendous rose garden surrounded the center fountain, leading the way to the monolith.  The monolith is 121 figures trying to reach the top of the structure.

A quick train ride back to the hotel, and we have essentially brought 2016 Big Adventure to an end.  Off to find our last dinner in Oslo for this trip. Tomorrow we return home, and try to wrap our heads around everything we’ve seen and done!

4 Countries and 1200+ KM

04 Monday Jul 2016

It has been a very, very long day.  And but for one not so bright moment, a fun one.  But first I need to go back to yesterday’s adventure and bring you up to date.

An uneventful drive from Trondheim to Oslo, other than watching a driver ahead of us fall asleep at the wheel and cross into oncoming lanes of travel.  Fortunately there was no other traffic, and he was able to manuever back to the correct side of the road where he pulled over.  We all gave him very stern looks as we passed by.  We took a different route down and got to wind alongside a river most of the way.  It reminded me very much of the Cold River in Vermont in the summer. We passed several fishermen out in the middle casting their lines and waiting for bites.

We didn’t see any deer or moose along the way, but we stopped at the moose statue for a quick photo.  The jellybean in Millenial Park Chicago has nothing on this moose!

We arrived in Oslo in plenty of time, and got queued up to enter the ferry.  Over 700 cars, motorcycles and their passengers, along with the non-vehicle passengers.  Very much a mini-cruise ship with all sorts of shops, restaurants and entertainment. We got to our cabins, dropped off our bags and had a bit of lunch in the main dining room.  My other half and I ventured to the 15th deck Observation Lounge to enjoy the views of Oslo Fjord and open sea once we left the fjord.  Stunning views down the fjord of Norway and Sweden. Dinner was late at the buffet as Germany vs Italy soccer match was going on, and all other restaurants were full or closed.  Good selection of foods, and pretty tasty, too.

A beautiful sunset, first we have seen since leaving Georgia.

I was awake this morning around 5AM and glimpsed outside without letting too much light in – didn’t want to disturb beauty sleep for others! Got to see bits of Denmark as got closer to the end of our voyage. We were up and in the car by 9:30AM, and luckily one of the first cars off the ship. A great start to the day, or so you would think, right??

We stopped for gas, coffee and croissants before hitting the Autobahn.  Have to say my first experience on the Autobahn was not what I expected.  There were some incredible stretches where we really got to feel the open road (at roughly 200KM/HR, give or take…Mom, no need to do the conversion to MPH!).  For the most part, though, we were stuck in long lines of traffic due to an accident and what appeared to be a test for local emergency services.  Scenery was nice, but due to the trees along both sides of the road it was hard to see much. We skirted Frankfurt, Nürnberg and Munich.

Somewhere before Munich we stopped for gas and a quick snack/WC break. Two exits further down the road my other half realizes he no longer has his cell phone…quick search of the car while figuring out how to turn around and head back to the rest area to see if it may have been found and turned in. A backup due to a lane mergemade the return trip abut 45 minutes. No phone had been turned in, and we couldn’t locate it anywhere.  A quick call to Verizon to suspend coverage for the missing phone and we were back on the road toward Italy.

We passed field after field of hops as we neared Munich, and that was fun to see.  Wish we could have had the beer to go with it, though!

We saw our first sign for Verona around 10PM, while still officially in Germany.  We soon crossed into Austria where we detoured through part of Innsbruck due to road construction.

We crosed into Italy about 11:30PM, and arrived at our hotel at about 1:30AM.  Italy was beautiful at night…all the castles and churches in the little towns were lit up, and there were so, so many stars in the sky. Unfortunately I couldn’t get pictures this late at night from a moving vehicle, but I am hoping tomorrow will bring plenty of opportunity for photos on our drive to Tuscany.

Calling it a night as the alarm is going off sooner rather than later, and we will be on the road in just over 5 hours.  I don’t want to sleep through much of tomorrow’s drive!

So, so much to share from today, I almost dont know where to start. And even if I did, the current WiFi connection is horrible and aggravating. (Darn international waters!)

Suffice to say today was beyond our expectations, we are having a wonderful adventure to Kiel, Germany where we will land at approximately 10AM tomorrow.

For those curious minded, there is apparently a YouTube video of where we are spending today. I havent seen it yet, so I cannot comment on accuracy. Search Color Line Oslo to Kiel ferry…

A full update with lots of pictures will be shared tomorrow. One highlight of today…we got to see the sun set!

Last day in Trondheim

01 Friday Jul 2016

Today was unplanned fun. Started the day in town shopping for Norwegian handicrafts and gifts at Husfliden. Really wanted to buy more woolen items, but space is limited this trip. So many gorgeous textiles and possibilities.  Enough reason for a return trip – as if we needed another reason! While I shopped the boys went to the office to print travel docs. Of course, I was done before they returned, so I explored two other stores and found more treasures.  Christmas will have a definite theme this year…sorry not sorry, family! Finally met up with the boys – walked out of a store, loooked left across the street and saw my other half with arms waving above his head.  No chance of missing them, fortunately. If I’d stayed any longer and wandered into any more stores, I might have needed to buy a suitcase, too.

A quick stop at home, then headed to Sverresborg Trondelag Folk Museum to walk around and get a bite to eat for lunch. Unfortunately the museum was closed for the day as there was a concert this evening. We were able to get the last remaining, unreserved table for a bite to eat at the tavern. We sat outside for a bit then headed upstairs to our table. We got to hear snippets of sound check by none other than Elton John! The concert crowd looked much the same here as it does in the states.

Trondelag is an outdoor museum with over 80 buildings, some dating back to 1100 and the Viking days. It is built around King Sverre’s medieval castle.  There is an old stave church, an old fort and an upper-class home from the 1700’s.  This will definitely be on our “to do” list on our next visit.

Buffet was delicious – poached salmon, pork loin, roasted squash, and potatoes.  We also got to try a traditional Norwegian dish, rømmegrøt, or sour cream porridge.  It is served on holidays and special occasions…drizzled with butter and cinnamon sugar, and eaten with cured meats. I remembered to take a picture of it before I dug in. Quite yummy! Between the rømmegrøt, salmon and bread, I think I ate half a  stick of butter.  My hips may not appreciate it, but my taste buds sure did.  I’m not overly worried – I will walk it off soon enough.

Home now, packing for tomorrow’s early departure.  We leave at 5AM to arrive in Oslo in time for the ferry to Kiel, Germany. Then on to Italy!

Small Fjord tour

30 Thursday Jun 2016

We were up much earlier today – thanks to setting an alarm last night so we could get the day started before the morning had completely departed. And, I suppose, a bit of practice for Saturday morning when we need to leave at 5AM to catch the Kiel Ferry from Oslo.

Today we drove south toward the lower part of Trondheim Fjord and then followed it north back into town. This fjord is more inland so does not have the steep mountains and drop offs as the fjords in the west.  Next visit we will explore that area.  It was difficult to fully capture the scenery today, partially due to the weather being overcast, and also the windy road.  Just as I got ready to snap a photo the road turned away from the fjord, or trees would obscure the view. It was very pretty and bucolic. The houses were a bit larger, and the views must be incredible for those on top of the hills. We passed several more farms, and saw several herds of cows, a few horses and sheep. Watching the breeze blow through the grain in the fields coupled with the twisting road made for a very relaxing ride.

We watched the ferry heading out, and a large cruise ship coming up the fjord. As we arrived in town another ferry was at the dock ready to take on cars and passengers.

We next ventured to Trondheim Trag (mall) for a frozen yogurt.  The salesclerk was very helpful and friendly (and the daughter of our hosts). It was exactly what we needed and got the blood flowing again.

From there we went to another trag closer to home to look for gifts to bring home. I didn’t find quite what I was looking for, but boy, oh boy, if I was still an avid knitter, could I have done some damage! Beautiful yarns and patterns…sigh. I did consider buying a small “project” for my mother, but decided against it – for now. A trip to the grocery store was our final stop for the day where we stocked up on a few items we wanted to bring home.  Easier to buy them here and carry them with us than having to find a grocery in Oslo at the end of our trip.
Some random photos of town, and as promised the emergency exit sign that makes my other half giggle.

He always seems to be in such a hurry!

A wonderful dinner of salmon, potatoes, carrots, green beans and cucumbers.  (I am not good at remembering to take pictures of food before we dig in.  Maybe once we hit Italy…) We have certainly gotten our fill of seafood this week, and enjoyed every bite. We relaxed a bit and enjoyed the evening sun, although the wind was blowing so it was a tad chilly. A neighbor came with a pallet of firewood, and the guys unloaded and stacked it.  Not something a Sri Lankan learns in childhood, that’s for sure! Luna looked on to make sure it was done properly…and look for her new chew toy, perhaps.

Tomorrow will likely be another quiet day.  We will need to pack and load the car in the evening, as well as get to bed much earlier than we have been.  The second half of our adventure begins on Saturday!

Trondheim – Day 3

29 Wednesday Jun 2016

Vacation hours were in full force again today…we awoke much later than planned (no comment on what exact time it was, other than to say I now have actual proof someone else snores as much as I allegedly do!).  First stop was to the Norwegian Olympic Training Center for ski jumping and cross country skiing.  We lucked into watching a practice ski jump session. So much fun! Wish I’d known the names of the jumpers so I knew who to cheer for in the next winter Olympics.

wp-1467240252803.mpeg

wp-1467240252803.mpeg

A quick visit to the University to see Best Man’s office and find the best ever invention…the robotic lawn mower. Um, seriously, do they sell these in the US?  I have found the ultimate Christmas gift for my other half if they do! Although I will put Bob the Gardner out of work if I indulge in it.  I obviously need to mull this over…

From there we went to the Kristiansen Festning (Trondheim fort) which was instrumental in the 30 Year War between Sweden and Norway, and also was a German stronghold in WW2.

The above photo is of “monk island” – the Norwegian Alcatraz.

Next stop of the day was bittersweet and made me feel Dad was “hovering near.” We went to Dora I, an integral part of the German submarine force in WW2. We couldn’t get close to the actual sea level entries, but the historical information posted in the area and sheer size of the place gave a hauntingly good picture of its use and importance in the war.  Being a submariner’s daughter, this was a very poignant stop. I could only imagine my father’s reaction to visiting it (if he hadn’t already during his visit to Norway in 1956-57 as a student at the Naval Academy), or knowing his daughter was visiting it. I am learning my knowledge of WW2 history is seriously lacking as what we were taught in school in the US was very watered down up until the our involvement via Pearl Harbor. I am now a sponge when it comes to what was happening in the rest of the world.

We then headed back into town to purhase shrimp, bread and mayonaisse for a traditional Norwegian meal.  If I had a seafood market even close to the caliber of this one I might consider giving up beef! (Mind you I said consider it, not that I actually would!) A wonderful meal shared with local friends who made the evening extra special and memorable.

And now it is past my bedtime as we are getting up early to explore the fjords tomorrow.

Oh, but one last photo – the very dapper man to show where the crosswalk is.  It was just today we noticed how dashing and proper looking he is in his  hat!  I will post a photo soon of the exit sign which never fails to bring a giggle to my other half.

June 28 – Further Trondheim Explorations

28 Tuesday Jun 2016

We have clearly settled into vacation-mode. Vaguely heard our hosts up and about this morning, but neither of us stirred until 10:30AM. I suppose when you figure it was again about 1:30AM when we went to bed, we really didn’t sleep in too much. And we had that wonderful late night walk!

Today we ventured back to town to go to the post office to exchange USD for NOK and mail postcards. We wandered around a bit more and meandered through an outdoor market we saw being set up yesterday. Vendors were selling jewelry, knit goods, clothing, and local food. Lots of wonderful smells, sights and sounds.Even got to listen briefly to a polka band! If my father had been here he would have been dancing.

wp-1467130024269.mpeg

wp-1467130024269.mpeg

We picked AK up at work and got a tour of the hospital where she works. Lots of different artwork throughout, lots of glass letting in natural light, and all the buildings connected by enclosed walkways. (Especially useful in the winter!) The stairs in the hospital are numbered so you know exactly how many you have walked up (or down) and you don’t have to count as you go. Walking and cycling is very much encouraged…employees pay to park their cars if they drive to work. Part of the tour also included seeing two of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awards.

A stop at the grocery store was needed on the way home as the boys are cooking rice and curry tonight. And, my other half is very happy as he now has his Thai chilies to spice up his meals. He has quite a few to eat before we head to Italy!

The sun is shining, and we have appropriate beverages in hand. Time to relax and enjoy the sounds and aromas coming from the kitchen!

June 27 – Part 2

27 Monday Jun 2016

We had a lovely late supper of salad, cheese, flat breads, and today’s lunch leftovers. About 11:15PM we decided a walk around the lake with Luna (the dog) was in order. A serene, calm and relaxing 1.5 miles (give or take) which burned off the remaining unused calories of the day. We saw a blur of a deer as we neared the end of the loop. The watch photo is Anil’s arm, and his watch is generally 5 minutes fast. It is now about as dark as it will get for the night, so I will finish the wine in my glass and call it a night. More adventure awaits tomorrow!

Norway, Trondheim, Vacation2016

We arrived last evening around 5:30PM (I think…the day is still somewhat of a blur.) The drive from Oslo was gorgeous.  Lots of farms, small villages/towns, and lots and lots of green.  There was still snow on some of the higher elevations which made for some incredible water falls.  Most of the drive was on 2 lane highway (one lane each direction), with the occasional passing lane.  Lots of small motorhomes en route to/from summer holidays.  A wonderful lunch along the way, and a few cat naps for me!  We arrived in Trondheim around 5:30PM (I think…the day is still somewhat of a blur.) Settled in, had a lovely meal of stir-fried trout, salmon and veggies with rice.  Homemade rhubarb tart for dessert – Anil’s favorite dessert (besides chocolate which he considers to be a food group and/or necessity and not a dessert) is rhubarb. We sat outside on the porch and enjoyed catching up and relaxing.  I kept waiting for the sun to go down, and had to keep reminding myself that it wouldn’t really get dark.  That, coupled with good conversation, and a bottle or 2 of wine (ok, for those who know us well, it may have been slightly more than 2, but no one was counting!), made for a wonderful first evening. We nearly saw sunrise by the time we turned in for the night. The official sunset was 23:36, and sunrise was 3:06.

We slept in today and appear to have recovered from any remaining jet lag.  A late breakfast of waffles, and soon after we were on our way into town to explore.  First stop was Nidaros Cathedral, the most northern cathedral   It was built over the tomb of St. Olav, the Viking king and first national saint of Norway. Stunning stained glass windows throughout, and 2 organs.  The smaller has 30 stops and 1,809 pipes.  The larger has 127 stops and 9,620 pipes.  What fun our organist friends could have on these instruments! As it is an active church, no photographs were allowed inside, but I did take several from outside.

View of the fjord heading into town

Nidaros Cathedral

From there we wandered to the waterfront and stopped for a bit of lunch. Anil opted for a pizza with smoked salmon, I chose the steamed mussels appetizer.  We both brought home leftovers!  A walk back to the car to digest our food, and just in time as the rain started on our way home.

Translation….”Thank you for walking.”  There was one on the bike lane that said “Thank you for biking nicely.”

Halfway through my mussels!
